The President’s Message
Hello, I’m Helen Wilkie and I welcome you to our CAPS Toronto website. We are the Toronto Chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, the association of choice for experts who speak professionally.
What do we mean by “speak professionally”? We don’t mean to imply that you are speaking unprofessionally, meaning not very well. In fact, many of our members come from backgrounds in which they speak, train or coach as part of a corporate job or an independent business, and they often speak very well indeed.
When we say “speak professionally” we mean we are speaking for a fee, getting paid for our speaking services; in short, operating a speaking business. If you are doing that now, or if you have aspirations to doing it, you’ve come to the right place. Our monthly events, our newsletters and magazine, our member webinars and our annual convention are all chock full of information, support and help for you to become a professional speaker. Or, if you are already speaking professionally, to become more successful in your speaking business.
That’s our professional edge: the business of speaking. If you know the speaking business is for you, or even if you’re just curious, I urge you to attend one of our chapter meetings and find out what we’re all about.
The Toronto Chapter is a large, active chapter as befits a large, booming city. And this year we are striving to become an even more attractive “home” for our members by acting on our theme for the year, “Up the Ante!” So if you don’t know us yet, you’ve not only come to the right place, but possibly at just the right time!
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Helen Wilkie
2012 President
CAPS Toronto
